Paul Smyth most recently served as the Global Chief Credit Officer for the Commercial Real Estate group at Credit Suisse. He was responsible for the vetting of all CRE loans through credit committee in the U.S. and Europe. This included interfacing with B-piece buyers, internal underwriting and credit operations, and interfacing with federal regulators. Mr. Smyth has extensive B-piece and workout experience, having managed over $50 billion in loan resolutions in various portfolios dating back to the mid-1980s. Additionally, Mr. Smyth has been involved in over 160 B piece/mezzanine acquisitions dating back to the 1990s. Mr Smyth formed the CRE origination platform at ARCap, and was part of executive team for the restart of Credit Suisse CRE lending group in 2014 which encompassed conduit, mezzanine and floating rate loans.
Prior to Credit Suisse, from 2002-2013, Mr. Smyth held several Executive roles, which included President, CEO, and COO in various entities of C-III Asset Management, and its predecessor companies Centerline Capital and ARCap Reit. During this time, he oversaw operations that provided all aspects of asset management. This included originations, CDO Management, and CMBS investments for a $120 billion of portfolio.
Mr. Smyth held various origination and asset management roles within Banc One Corp from 1986-02. The last role being Managing Director for Banc One Mortgage Capital Markets/ORIX Capital Markets. In this role, he oversaw the CMBS asset management platform nationwide. Through the late ’80’s and 90’s, he served as Senior Portfolio Manager, which included construction and development lending. He also managed various contracts and asset pools in conjunction with the FDIC and RTC throughout the US. Mr Smyth has been a panelist and participated in various industry CRE initiatives where he has served in numerous roles within CREFC, CMSA, and the MBA organizations. Mr. Smyth received his BBA degree in Finance and Real Estate from Baylor University. Mr. Smyth holds Series 7 and 63 licenses under FINRA.
Mark Brown most recently served as Managing Director of Credit Suisse in the Investment Banking division, based in New York. He was the Global Head of the Commercial Real Estate team of Securitized Products within the Asset Finance Group. His responsibilities included origination and structuring of commercial real estate transactions in the U.S. and Europe.
Mr. Brown joined Credit Suisse in September 2013 from BGC Partners where he was a Senior Managing Director in the BGC Real Estate Capital Markets team. Prior to that, he was a founding member of 801 Capital Finance, which provided a broad array of clients with commercial real estate and capital markets expertise regarding asset capitalization and finance, asset sales and dispositions, platform management and advisory and consulting services.
Previously he led the CMBS and Commercial Products division of the Commercial Real Estate Group at Centerline Capital Group. Mr. Brown’s responsibilities included overseeing commercial products origination and buy-side commercial lending activity. He joined Centerline in May 2008 after serving as president of Nomura Credit & Capital, Inc. and leading the Nomura Real Estate Finance Group, the origination and banking platform of Nomura Securities USA, Inc. Mr. Brown joined Nomura’s Real Estate Finance group in 2001 as a founding member.
Prior to working at Nomura he was with Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette where he was responsible for high-yield CMBS new issue debt and a member of the commercial mortgage credit committee.
Mr. Brown is a certified public accountant and for twelve years he specialized in real estate accounting, auditing, tax, and consulting services, primarily in the real estate group at BDO Seidman. He maintains his membership in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Mr. Brown holds a B.S. degree from William Patterson University. Mr. Brown holds Series 24, 79, 7,and 63 licenses under FINRA.
Co-Founder and Principal
Cary Williams started his career at Merrill Lynch Capital Markets in 1987 where he focused on balance sheet management for financial institutions. During the late 80’s and early 90’s, he was active with bank restructuring and various activities with the RTC. Mr. Williams has been involved in the CMBS market since its creation in the early 90’s. Over the last 30 years Mr. Williams has focused on the placement of CMBS B pieces, B notes, mezzanine loans, and whole loans. Mr. Williams spent 25 years at Merrill Lynch/Bank of America as a senior executive in structured products finance. In 2012, Mr Williams joined Royal Bank of Canada as a Managing Director in Structure Products. He continued to serve clients with a heavy emphasis on CRE and structured products. Mr. Williams joined Credit Suisse in 2014 as a senior executive in their structured products group where he continued to focus on CRE and the origination of CRE assets. Mr. Williams received an MBA from Southern Methodist University in Finance and Real Estate and a BBA from the University of Oklahoma in Finance and Accounting. Mr. Williams serves as a member on the Trinity River Authority Board of Directors appointed by the Governor of Texas. Mr. Williams holds Series 7,63 and 3 licenses under FINRA.
President, Broadsword Commercial Mortgage
Paul Jankovsky Jr, has over 35 years of capital markets, commercial banking and commercial real estate experience. He has been a regional manager and senior producer in the CMBS industry, originating in excess of $4B of securitized commercial real estate loans. Mr. Jankovsky has had successful tenures with Wall Street firms including Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase and Merrill Lynch. Mr. Jankovsky founded and is currently Managing Principal of JM Advisors LLC, a firm which was formed to participate in the purchase of distressed CMBS bonds. JM Advisors has been an advisor to regional banks where Mr. Jankovsky has implemented successful CMBS platforms, mezzanine platforms and has focused on specialized debt placement. Mr. Jankovsky was also Co-Founder and EVP of BH Capital LLC, a Behringer Harvard related entity which focused on investments in distressed real estate debt. Mr. Jankovsky holds a BBA from Baylor University where he majored in Finance.
President, Broadsword CRE Brokerage LLC
Marc Wedding is a strategic senior leader in the commercial real estate industry with over 30 years of experience specializing in acquisitions, brokerage, financing and property development primarily in the Texas and Florida markets. Marc has assembled over 300 completed commercial real estate transactions in his career that has comprised virtually all types of commercial real estate properties as well as land transactions, including single-family lot development, multi-family and commercial land transactions. Prior to joining Broadsword, Marc led TY Commercial Group’s Acquisition and Sales team for over twenty years where he implemented the strategy to accumulate value-added commercial assets recognizing additional value either through lease up or redevelopment of multi-tenant properties with a focus on unanchored strip retail properties. At TY, Marc directed the growth as a startup real estate investment firm to a peak of owning over 125 commercial real estate assets.
Marc has extensive experience in market analysis, asset valuation, and underwriting and contract negotiation. He has directed each aspect of transaction management that encompasses the commercial real estate full life cycle together with securing the necessary financing for each transaction. Marc has developed a broad network of highly qualified and experienced brokers, owners and lending sources with whom he collaborates extensively. The financing sources utilized range from regional banks, life insurance companies to CMBS loans.
Mr. Wedding holds a Bachelor of Science degree in economics and marketing from Ohio State University and is a licensed commercial real estate broker in the state of Texas.
Chief Credit Officer
Ryan Stephens is a commercial real estate professional with 20 years of real estate finance experience. Most recently, he was a Senior Vice President for C-III Commercial Mortgage LLC, where he underwrote CMBS and Balance Sheet loans. Previously, Mr. Stephens worked for C-III Asset Management’s special servicing division. During this time, he was responsible for resolving over $385mm in defaulted CMBS loans. Before joining C-III in 2011, Mr. Stephens worked at KeyBank, Centerline Capital Group (formerly ARCap REIT) and Principal Financial Group in their commercial real estate divisions. While at Centerline Capital Group, Mr. Stephens oversaw the CMBS “B-Piece” Due Diligence Acquisition team, interfaced with investors and loan originators and was a member of the Credit Risk Group that reviewed and approved CMBS “B-Piece” investments. Mr. Stephens graduated with honors from the University of Kansas with a BGS in Political Science and from Baylor University School of Law with a Juris Doctor degree.
Chief Operating Officer
Mr. Tesoriero most recently served as Director, Senior Operations Officer at Credit Suisse within the Commercial Real Estate Finance Group since 2013. Mr. Tesoriero acted as liaison with the firm’s internal Finance, Operations, Accounting and Corporate Administration divisions, while also responsible for budgeting, forecasting, management reporting, expense management and oversight of the integration and administration of CRE’s third party pipeline management technology solution.
Prior to Credit Suisse, he held similar positions at BGC Financial LP (“BGC”) as a managing director with the firms Real Estate Capital Markets Group, 801 Capital Finance and Centerline, Nomura and DLJ/ Credit Suisse where he served as Chief Operating Officer for each of the commercial real estate groups.
In addition to operations experience, Mr. Tesoriero was responsible for the marketing and sale of commercial loan servicing rights for the CMBS business as well as managing all third party vendors providing interim servicing and custody services for CMBS warehouse inventory. Mr. Tesoriero is a graduate of the State University of New York at Stony Brook with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics.
Managing Director — Fund Management
Robert Farrington most recently served as Director within ORIX Real Estate Americas’ Commercial Real Estate platform (“ORIX”), where he led the operations of the Special Servicing portfolio along with new business development. In that capacity he served as the primary relationship manager with the Rating Agencies. Over his 18 year career with ORIX, Mr. Farrington has managed several teams responsible for Bond Analytics, Bond/Collateral Surveillance, and a wide variety of finance and loan and bond investment related functions.
Prior to joining ORIX, Mr. Farrington worked for two years at First USA Bank, N.A. as a Senior Analyst in the structured products group. He was responsible for the analytics of several Credit Card Master Trusts, Home Equity, and Home Equity Line of Credit securitizations, as well as other various consumer based structured products. Before that, he worked for Fidelity Financial Group as a Senior Analyst responsible for their Automobile structured products. Mr. Farrington earned a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of North Texas.
President of Sinclair CRE Receiver, LLC
Mark S. Pakes serves as President of Sinclair CRE Receiver, LLC, a subsidiary of Broadsword Investors, LLC. He is responsible for Sinclair’s new business activities, including the development and management of receiver assignments for securitized and non-securitized CRE assets.
Prior to joining Sinclair CRE Receiver, LLC, Mr. Pakes was Managing Director of ORIX Real Estate Americas’ Commercial Real Estate Loan Portfolio group, where he led a team responsible for actively managing OREA’s portfolio assets, including the resolution of non-performing commercial mortgage loans in various CMBS and ORIX Real Estate Americas portfolios. Prior to joining ORIX, Mr. Pakes worked for several firms under the RTC, Banc One Management and Consulting Corp and Nomura Securities as a senior manager in the loan asset management and servicing groups.
He began his career in the commercial real estate business, working as a property manager, leasing agent and broker specializing in raw land sales and investment. Mr. Pakes earned a BBA in Finance / Real Estate from Texas A&M University and a Master of Theological Studies from Holy Cross. Mr. Pakes has served as a panelist at several industry-related conferences and as a voting member of the Commercial Real Estate Finance Council. He is a licensed real estate broker in the State of Texas.
Managing Director, Development & Equity Advisory Services
Mr. Cronister is a commercial real estate executive with over 27 years of real estate equity asset management and development experience including construction, valuation, underwriting, acquisition, and related financing. Previously, Mr. Cronister was Chief Operating Officer and Managing Director for the ORIX Real Estate Americas based in Dallas, TX. Throughout his 22 years with ORIX, Mr. Cronister held various senior positions with ORIX Real Estate Equities group out of the Chicago and Dallas offices. Prior to ORIX, Mr. Cronister held Property Management, Leasing and Development positions for Koll/Rubloff and Walsh/Higgins in the Chicago market.
Mr. Cronister also has extensive experience in CMBS “B-Piece” Due Diligence, Loan Originations and CRE Loan Workouts. Mr. Cronister also headed all asset management for all Real Estate Owned (REO) within non-performing pools serviced by ORIX. Mr. Cronister holds a MBA from the University of Notre Dame and Bachelor of Arts from Benedictine College.
Chief Information Officer
Kyle Reed is an IT executive with more than 25 years’ experience beginning with EDS in 1988. He received his B.S. in Economics from the University of Texas at Arlington. In 2000 he became a Microsoft Certified Software Developer. As an infrastructure manager, he earned the Top Gun award at EDS and the Apple award at Lomas Information Systems. As a consultant in the early dot com era he developed large ecommerce sites and enterprise applications for the Fortune 500. In 2003 he began a focus on commercial real estate finance, leading the teams that developed several applications for ARCap REIT, Centerline Capital Group and C-III Capital Partners. In 2016 he founded Avena Systems to focus on helping firms take advantage of cloud computing and to develop the next generation commercial real estate platform.
